Studying abroad in Lisbon, Portugal, was one of the most life changing experiences I’ve ever had. Before I left, I was a mix of nervous and excited. I knew it would push me out of my comfort zone, but I didn’t realize just how much it would change the way I see myself and the world. Living and studying in Lisbon gave me the chance to explore a new country while also helping me grow in ways I’ll carry with me forever.
On a personal level, Lisbon taught me how to be independent. For the first time, I was on my own in a country where the language, culture, and daily life were completely new. Figuring out the public transportation, ordering food in Portuguese, and balancing school with exploring the city pushed me to adapt quickly. I loved slowing down and enjoying pastel de nata at a local café, my favorite treat. Those simple moments reminded me that growth often comes from being present and open to whatever comes your way.
I also got the chance to travel around Portugal and see so much of its beauty. I visited São Jorge Castle and took in the incredible views of Lisbon, and I saw the Cristo Rei statue overlooking the river. I spent afternoons in Belém, tasting the original pastéis de Belém and learning about Portugal’s history. On weekends, I explored Sintra’s palaces and the Algarve’s beaches and cliffs, which were breathtaking. I even went on boat parties along the Tagus River with other students, where we celebrated our adventures and shared stories from our own countries. These trips and experiences showed me how much you can learn from exploring new places and connecting with people from different backgrounds.
Studying at ISCTE University Institute of Lisbon also gave me a new perspective on school and work. The management class I took while there taught me how to lead teams and think about problems in different ways. Talking with students from other countries taught me that leadership and professionalism aren’t just about technical skills, they’re about understanding different perspectives and working well with others. These lessons reinforced my goal of becoming a bilingual CPA or CFO and gave me confidence that I can succeed in a global workplace.
Studying abroad wasn’t just three weeks in another country, it was an experience that taught me independence, opened my mind, and gave me memories I’ll never forget. Lisbon left me with lifelong friendships, unforgettable adventures, and the confidence to take on new challenges, no matter where I am. Thank you Portugal.
